Free Urology Treatment Under Ayushman Bharat: Who Is Eligible and What Is Covered?

Worried about the cost of kidney stone or prostate treatment? Here is how the Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka scheme works, who can use it, and how to get free urology treatment at Sanyra Hospital.

By Sanyra Hospital Urology TeamSanyra Hospital, BangaloreNovember 20266 min read

Many people live with kidney stone pain, a weak urine stream or repeated urine infections for months. Often the reason is not fear of the doctor. It is fear of the bill.

If you hold a BPL card in Karnataka, or you are 70 years or older, you may be able to get urology surgery and hospital care at no cost. The Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka scheme makes this possible. At Sanyra Hospital in Kengeri, our urology team helps eligible patients use it from the first visit to discharge.

Below, we explain the scheme in simple words.

At a glance

  • BPL families get fully cashless treatment for covered procedures.
  • APL families get part of the cost covered at a lower, fixed rate.
  • All Karnataka citizens aged 70 and above are covered, whatever their income.
  • Cover is up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for hospital treatment.

What Is Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK)?

Ayushman Bharat is a health scheme run by the Government of India. It gives poor and low-income families cashless hospital treatment.

Karnataka joined it with its own state scheme, Arogya Karnataka. Together they are called Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka, or AB-ArK. The scheme is managed by the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST).

What does “cashless” mean?

You do not pay the hospital for covered treatment. The government pays the hospital directly.

Who Is Eligible?

There are three main groups:

Category A

BPL families

Families with a BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration card get fully cashless treatment for covered procedures.

Category B

APL families

Families with an APL card can also use the scheme. They get part of the cost covered and pay the rest at a lower, fixed rate.

Age 70+

Senior citizens

Karnataka now covers all citizens aged 70 and above, whatever their income. Seniors in families already covered get an extra top-up cover.

If you are not sure which group you fall in, our Arogya Mitra desk can check for you using your ration card and Aadhaar.

How Much Does the Scheme Cover?

Eligible families get cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for hospital treatment.

The cover is shared by the whole family, not given to each person. Each surgery or treatment has a fixed “package” under the scheme. The package usually includes:

  • Doctor and surgeon fees
  • Tests done during your hospital stay
  • Medicines during admission
  • Operation theatre and ward charges
  • Surgical items such as stents, where included in the package

Which Urology Treatments Can Be Covered?

At Sanyra Hospital, our urology centre is led by Dr. Rajendra Prasad KN, MCh Urology. Common urology problems treated under the scheme include:

1

Kidney stones

Treatment with ESWL (shock waves), RIRS (laser through a thin scope) or surgery for large stones. Kidney Stone Treatment

2

Enlarged prostate (BPH)

Surgery when medicines no longer help. Prostate Enlargement

3

Blockage in the ureter

A blocked urine pipe, for example from a stuck stone.

4

Bladder problems

Such as bladder stones or trouble emptying the bladder.

5

Urological cancers

Surgery for prostate, kidney, bladder or testicular cancer. Prostate Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Bladder Cancer

6

Urethral stricture

Narrowing of the urine passage.

Whether your treatment is covered depends on the approved package for your condition. Our team confirms this before admission, so you know where you stand.

What Is Usually Not Covered?

It helps to know the limits so there are no surprises:

  • OPD visits: a simple consultation without admission is usually not covered
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Fertility treatments
  • Treatments outside the approved package list

If any part of your care falls outside the scheme, we will tell you clearly in advance.

Documents You Need

Keep these ready when you visit:

  • Ration card (BPL or APL)
  • Aadhaar card of the patient
  • Ayushman / AB-ArK card, if you already have one
  • Any old reports: scans, urine tests or prescriptions
  • Referral letter, if one was given by a government hospital

The card can be made with your ration card and Aadhaar for a small fee of ₹10. You can also check your eligibility online at arogya.karnataka.gov.in.

How to Get Free Urology Treatment at Sanyra Hospital: Step by Step

  1. Visit or call us

Come to Sanyra Hospital in Kengeri or call us on +91 84316 68979. Mention that you want treatment under Ayushman Bharat.

  2. Meet the Arogya Mitra

The Arogya Mitra is the scheme helper at the hospital. They check your card, verify your eligibility and guide you through the paperwork.

  3. See the urologist

Dr. Rajendra Prasad KN examines you and orders the tests needed, such as an ultrasound, urine test or CT scan.

  4. Pre-approval

If you need admission or surgery, the hospital sends your details to the scheme for approval. You do not have to handle it yourself.

  5. Treatment and discharge

Once approved, you get your treatment. For covered care, you go home without paying the hospital bill.

Don’t Delay Treatment Because of Cost

Many urology problems get worse with time:

  • A small kidney stone can grow, block urine flow and damage the kidney.
  • An enlarged prostate can lead to sudden inability to pass urine.
  • Blood in the urine can be an early sign of bladder or kidney cancer. Early treatment gives the best results.

Waiting often turns a simple procedure into a bigger operation. If cost is what is stopping you, the scheme may remove that worry.

When Should You See a Urologist?

Visit a urologist soon if you notice:

  • Severe pain in the side, back or lower belly
  • Blood in your urine
  • Burning while passing urine that keeps coming back
  • A weak stream, or feeling the bladder is not empty
  • Waking up many times at night to pass urine
  • Fever with urine problems
!

Go to emergency care right away if you cannot pass urine at all, or have severe pain with fever and vomiting. Sanyra Hospital’s emergency unit is open 24/7: 080 2991 7599
